The Analysis of Thermal Constraints on Pilots: Numerical Modelling and Evaluation

Frank Salis, Dassault Aviation, Saint Cloud, France

The paper focuses on the presentation of a human thermal model called ATHOM developed by Dassault Aviation. It takes into account human thermal physiology and radiative, convective and conductive exchanges with the environment. In particular, the blood loop, sweating and shivering are modelled to give outputs enabling the analysis of thermal stress induced in cockpits (core temperature, skin temperature, heat storage etc.). Application to pilots' cases are explained, taking into account human variability. Comparative evaluations of configurations can then be conducted and are presented in a second step.
