FLYING IS NOT DANGEROUS CRASHING IS !

Robin T Archer

This paper sets out to show why it is necessary to train for the safe evacuation from a helicopter that has crashed.

The design and reliability of modern helicopters has reached an impressive level but of course they are primarily designed to fly rather than crash.

Through the efforts of the CAA and others, many improvements have been incorporated into aircraft design which have improved the crash worthiness, however the situation in which the crew and passengers are likely to find themselves gives cause for concern.

Landing a helicopter on the water is much more difficult than landing on dry land. Equally crashing into water carries a greater risk.

This increased risk comes from the possibility of drowning and the fact that water is likely to cause greater damage to the aircraft.
